History Of Valley Woods Nature Preserve:
It was once part of a much larger forest called Valley Woods. The Valley Woods forest once stretched from 12 Mile Road to 8 Mile Road. However, as the city of Southfield grew over the years, the forest dwindled in size. In fact, by the 1970s, only 100 acres of Valley Woods remained.
The Valley Woods Nature Preserve we know today was established in 1974 by the Southfield Nature Society. Since then, the City of Southfield has maintained and managed the nature preserve.
